A pothole is not the problem. It is the symptom. Water has found its way into the base, the material below has moved, and the surface has given way. Fill the hole without fixing the cause and it comes back within a season.
All Ash repairs potholes and damaged asphalt across Greater Melbourne, on residential driveways and commercial surfaces alike. We cut out the failed area, clean and prepare the base, then patch with hot-mix asphalt and compact it so the repair bonds to the surrounding surface and holds. It costs a little more than a shovel of cold-mix tipped in the hole. It also lasts, which is the point.
What we repair
If your asphalt has started to break up, the sooner it is dealt with the smaller the job. Small areas of damage let water into the base, and once that happens the failure spreads outward and downward. We repair:
- Potholes in driveways, carparks, roads, and laneways
- Broken and crumbling sections cut out and patched back to a sound surface
- Edge break-up where the perimeter of a driveway or carpark has started to erode
- Surface depressions and sunken areas caused by base movement or poor drainage
- Trip hazards and lifted sections that create a safety and liability risk
- Reinstatement after utility or plumbing works where a surface has been cut and needs patching
If the damage is widespread rather than localised, patching may be throwing good money after bad. In that case we will tell you, and talk you through resurfacing instead. See our asphalt resurfacing and profiling service.
How a repair should be done
A repair that lasts follows the same principles as a driveway that lasts. The surface is only as good as what sits under it.
- Cut out the failure: We saw or mill back to sound asphalt on all sides, squaring off the area rather than working to a ragged edge that will fail again.
- Clean and prepare the base: The hole is cleared of loose material and debris so the new asphalt bonds to a solid foundation, not to broken fragments.
- Prime the edges: A tack coat is applied so the patch keys into the surrounding surface and seals against water at the join.
- Lay and compact hot-mix: We fill with hot-mix asphalt and compact it to match the level of the surrounding surface, so there is no lip, no dip, and no weak point.
Note: All Ash does not offer crack sealing. Where a surface is cracked or broken, we cut out and patch the affected area rather than applying a liquid join.
Repairs for every kind of surface
Driveway pothole repairs
Potholes and broken patches on a home driveway worsen fast once water gets in and the freeze of a Melbourne winter works at them. We repair the damaged area properly so you are not paying to fix the same hole every year.
Commercial and carpark repairs
Potholes and surface failures in a carpark are a trip hazard, a liability, and a poor first impression for customers. We repair commercial surfaces with staged works that keep your site open and trading where possible.
Safety and trip hazard repairs
Lifted, sunken, or broken sections create a genuine risk on any surface the public uses. We make these safe with durable patching that sits flush with the surrounding asphalt.
Patch or resurface? Straight advice
Not every worn surface needs a full resurface, and not every pothole is a quick patch. We assess the extent of the damage and tell you which approach makes sense for your site and your budget. No upsell.
Every repair, large or small, gets the same crew and the same standard. All Ash owns its equipment and runs its own team, so a repair job is not palmed off to whoever is available. That is how we keep the quality consistent whether we are patching one pothole or resurfacing a school carpark.
Why repair it now rather than later
Asphalt damage does not hold still. A pothole the size of a dinner plate is a cheap fix today. Left through a wet winter, water undermines the base around it, the edges break away, and what was a one-hour patch becomes a section that needs digging out and rebuilding. Repairing early is the difference between a minor cost and a major one.
Water is the enemy
Every asphalt failure traces back to water reaching the base. A prompt, properly sealed repair keeps water out and protects the rest of the surface. A cold-mix fill that does not bond simply channels water straight back underneath.
Small problems spread
One pothole rarely stays one pothole. The same base weakness that caused it is usually at work nearby. Dealing with it early stops the damage travelling across the surface.
Safety and liability
On a driveway it is an inconvenience. On a carpark, footpath, or commercial site it is a hazard you are responsible for. A flush, durable repair removes the risk.

The All Ash difference
Owner-involved delivery
The owners of All Ash are across the work from first assessment to final compaction. You deal with people who are accountable for the result, not a call centre.
Full in-house fleet
We own and run our own pavers, rollers, skidsteers, bobcats, and milling gear. That means we can schedule repairs quickly and keep the cost down, with no hired machinery to wait on.
Repairs that hold
We repair the cause, not just the hole. Cut out, clean, prime, patch, and compact. It is the method that separates a repair that lasts from one you pay for twice.
All Ash has been repairing and building asphalt surfaces across Melbourne since 2011, backed by a team carrying more than 25 years of collective experience. Whether it is a single driveway pothole or ongoing maintenance across a commercial site, we treat it as a job worth doing once and doing right.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How much does a pothole repair cost in Melbourne?
The cost depends on the size and depth of the damage, how many areas need repair, and access to the site. A single localised pothole is a small job; multiple failing areas across a driveway or carpark cost more. All Ash provides an assessment and estimate rather than a fixed rate, because a proper repair is priced on what the surface actually needs. Call 03 9887 0870 to arrange one.
Why do potholes keep coming back after they are filled?
Because the fill treated the symptom, not the cause. A pothole forms when water reaches the base and the material below moves. If you tip cold-mix into the hole without cutting back to sound asphalt, cleaning the base, and sealing the edges, water gets straight back underneath and the repair fails. We cut out, prepare, prime, and compact so the patch bonds and keeps water out.
Do you repair both driveways and commercial surfaces?
Yes. All Ash repairs residential driveways, commercial carparks, roads, laneways, and public surfaces across Greater Melbourne. For commercial sites we can stage the work to keep you trading where possible.
Do you offer crack sealing?
No. All Ash does not carry out crack sealing, which is a liquid join we do not provide. Where a surface is cracked or broken, we cut out the affected area and patch it with hot-mix asphalt so the repair is structural rather than cosmetic.
Should I patch the potholes or resurface the whole area?
It depends on how widespread the damage is. If failures are localised, patching is the cost-effective fix. If the surface is breaking up across most of its area, patching becomes a false economy and resurfacing is the better spend. We assess the extent of the damage and give you a straight recommendation either way.
How quickly can you carry out a repair?
We offer prompt patching and repair work across Melbourne. Timing depends on the scale of the job and current scheduling, but we prioritise safety hazards and prompt response. Call 03 9887 0870 for an estimate and timeframe.
